Otterkey FAQ
1. What information can I manage with Otterkey?
Otterkey helps you manage accounts, passwords, subscriptions, and two-factor authentication codes in one place. You can also organize email addresses, phone numbers, login methods, payment methods, and categories.
The Summary page provides an overview of your accounts, subscription spending, 2FA entries, and other stored information.
2. How does Otterkey protect my data?
Otterkey stores your vault locally using AES-256-GCM encryption. Encryption keys are protected by the system Keychain.
You can also enable Face ID Unlock under Settings → Face ID Unlock to prevent others from accessing Otterkey while using your device.
3. How do I sync my data across devices?
Go to Settings → iCloud Data and enable Sync with iCloud.
Devices signed in to the same Apple ID can synchronize your encrypted Otterkey data when iCloud and an internet connection are available. You can also view the last successful sync, check items waiting to upload or download, and start a sync manually.
4. What is the difference between Local Backup and iCloud Sync?
iCloud Sync keeps your data consistent across supported devices. Local Backup stores an encrypted recovery copy on the current device.
Otterkey updates the local backup after your data changes. You can also open Settings → iCloud Data → Local Backup to refresh or restore it manually.
Restoring a local backup replaces the contents of your current vault, so check the backup date and item counts before continuing.
5. Which apps and file formats can I import from?
Otterkey can recognize several common password-manager formats, including Apple Passwords CSV, Bitwarden CSV or JSON, 1Password 1PUX, KeePass XML, and selected generic CSV, JSON, ZIP, and otpauth:// 2FA data.
Imported items are added to your existing vault. Otterkey skips detected duplicates instead of clearing or overwriting your existing data. Unsupported formats or unrecognized fields may be skipped.
6. How do I export my Otterkey data?
Go to Settings → iCloud Data → Local Backup and tap the export button in the upper-right corner.
After you acknowledge the security warning and authenticate with Face ID or your device passcode, Otterkey creates a CSV file in the On My iPhone/Otterkey folder in the Files app and opens the system share sheet.
The exported file may contain passwords, 2FA secrets, and other sensitive information in plaintext. Do not send it through untrusted messaging services, email accounts, or public cloud-storage links. Delete the file securely when you no longer need it.
7. Why am I not receiving subscription reminders?
Please check that notifications are allowed for Otterkey in iOS Settings, notifications are enabled under Otterkey Settings → Notifications, reminders are enabled for the relevant subscription, and the renewal date, reminder interval, and notification time are correct.
A reminder may not appear if its scheduled time has already passed, the subscription is no longer active, or notification permission has been disabled.
8. How does Otterkey calculate spending in different currencies?
Each subscription keeps its original currency. You can choose a summary currency under Settings → Currency, and Otterkey will convert subscription amounts when calculating the totals shown on the Summary page.
Exchange rates require an internet connection to update. If the latest rates are unavailable, Otterkey may continue using previously saved exchange-rate data.
9. Can I recover a deleted account?
Yes. Deleted accounts are moved to Recently Deleted and retained for up to 30 days. During this period, you can restore an account or permanently delete it.
The 30-day recovery period currently applies to accounts. Deleted subscriptions and 2FA entries do not have the same recovery period, so review them carefully before confirming deletion.
10. How do I enable or disable Face ID Unlock?
Go to Settings → Face ID Unlock and use the switch to enable or disable it.
You will need to complete system authentication when enabling the feature. Afterward, Otterkey may request authentication when you reopen the app or return to it.
Otterkey uses the device-owner authentication provided by iOS. When available, you can follow the system prompt to use your device passcode if Face ID cannot be completed.
11. How do I purchase or restore Otterkey Pro?
Otterkey Pro is currently under development, so purchases and purchase restoration are not yet available.
Once released, you will be able to open Settings → Otterkey Pro, choose a subscription plan, and complete the purchase through the App Store. If you previously purchased Otterkey Pro using the same Apple ID, you will be able to select Restore Purchases to verify your entitlement without paying again.
Prices, subscription periods, and free-trial eligibility will be shown on the Otterkey Pro page and confirmed by the App Store before purchase.
12. How do I delete all of my Otterkey data?
Go to Settings → iCloud Data, select Delete All Data at the bottom of the page, and confirm the action.
This removes the vault, local backup, and related encryption keys from the current device. If iCloud Sync is enabled, Otterkey will also remove its synchronized data from your private iCloud storage.
This action cannot normally be undone. Export any information you need before deleting all data.
